The Rhetorical Analysis of Malcom X’s â€Å"The Ballot or the Bullet† On April 3rd, 1964 at a meeting in Cleveland, Ohio, Malcom X delivered a speech that would go down in American history as one of the most empowering speeches of all time. Over 2,000 people, both friends and enemies turned up to hear him speak. The speech was titled â€Å"The Ballot or the Bullet† which focused on black nationalism and racial injustice in the year 1964. Racial inequality was a huge issue for decades and Malcom X, being a prominent African-American civil rights activist was going to make that the focus of his speech. Upon doing so, they discovered that when whites are evenly divided, blacks can be the swing vote to make the final decision of what administration will be put in office. He used pathos to explore and appeal black nationalism as a rhetoric strategy to bring to light racial inequality and voting rights. He was an excellent speech writer and could get his audience excited about the subject matter of his speeches. Rappelling Rappelling is an instance that has greatly affected my life. Rappelling is the method of descending a shear face of cliff by means of a double rope passed under the thigh and over the opposite shoulder. I was about to go on a great rappelling trip with six of my closest friends. The group had decided that it would be best to stay at a park near the cliffs. Staying near the cliffs meant that we would be able to rappel for a longer time. The trip was not the first of any of my friends. We had each been to the cliffs multiple times and felt very comfortable. Once we arrived at the park, there was a five-mile hike to the cliffs. We gathered our gear one piece at a time and began to prepare ourselves for the short hike. Fifteen minutes after arriving, we were off to the cliffs. Soon after we left the parking lot, we encountered a few other hikers. They were there also going to the cliffs to spend the day rappelling. After one hour of hiking in and out of valleys, we finally made it to the cliffs. As soon as we got there, my friends began to tie all of the gear up and secure it for a safe day of rappelling. As the most senior of all my friends, I went behind them to ensure all of the gear was setup correctly. Meanwhile, my friends were taking a break. During their break, they saw the other group as they came out of the dense tree line to the opening of the cliff. My friends then watched them tie all of their gear up and came back with a weird report. They said that they did not think that the other group knew what they were doing. I replied with a smart answer and went along securing our ropes. After a few hours of great rappelling, my friends and I suddenly heard this nearby gut wrenched scream; it sounded like a haunted house for a minute. First, I began to look around. I could not figure out where the scream had come from. I then thought to myself, it had to be the other group. Secondly, I spotted a couple yelling for help so I took off in their direction. Halfway there I realized that it was the other group. Evidently, one of their friends had slipped and fallen off the edge of the cliff and he had been hurt badly. Once I saw what had happened I sent the fastest runner to the road to get help while I had someone else help me. After the runner had started, I gathered the two groups to act as one. We had to get to the base of the cliff safely and keep the injured person alive. Those were my thoughts and I am sure that is what the rest were thinking. I was the first to the bottom and I then began to do a basic assessment. I stabilized the injured and instructed the rest of the group how to assist me. The rescue helicopter at last showed up. It felt like it was forever but it was only 2 hours. The paramedics then took over and congratulated me on my efforts. They told me I did a great job, they said normally if someone falls of the cliffs they do not live. Their words sent chills up my spine and I knew I did a good job. I was able to save a perfect strangers life just because I had been in the area. Finally, both groups began to pack out solemnly and began the long hike back to the parking lot. I felt this hike was great. The hike allowed all of my friends and me to calm down. We began talking about what would have happened if we were not there. I quickly stopped that talk and answered we should not think about what would have happened but what has happened. We had just saved some strangers life. That thought alone put a hush over my friends. I learned rappelling could be a number of things. It could mean loosing a close friend, having a poor self-esteem or just hanging from a cliff. Therefore, rappelling has taught me many different things. The main thing that rappelling has taught me though is if I put my mind to it I am able to do anything!

The Devil and Tom Walker was first published in 1824 among a collection of short stories called Tales of a Traveller, which Irving wrote as Geoffrey Crayon, one of his pseudonyms.  The Devil and Tom Walker appropriately appeared in a section called Money-Diggers, as the tale chronicles the selfish choices of an exceptionally stingy and greedy man. Historical Context Irvings piece is a relatively early entry into the many literary works considered Faustian tales - stories depicting greed, a thirst for instant gratification, and, ultimately, a deal with the devil as the means to such selfish ends. Still, many consider it one of Irvings finest stories and an exemplary piece of narrative writing. In fact, Irvings piece triggered a rebirth of sorts for the Faustian tale. It is widely reported to have inspired  Stephen Vincent Benets The Devil and Daniel Webster, which appeared in The Saturday Evening Post in 1936 - more than a century after Irvings story came out. Plot Summary The book opens with the tale of how  Captain Kidd, a pirate, buried some treasure in a swamp just outside Boston. It then jumps to the year 1727, when New Englander Tom Walker happened to find himself walking through this swamp. Walker, explains the narrator, was just the kind of man to jump at the prospect of a buried treasure, as he, along with his wife, were selfish to the point of destruction. While walking through the swamp,  Walker comes upon the devil, a great black man carrying an ax, whom Irving calls Old Scratch. The devil in disguise  tells Walker about the treasure, saying that he controls it but will give it to Tom for a price. Walker agrees readily, without really considering what he is expected to pay in return - his soul. The rest of the tale follows the twists and turns one might expect as a result of greed-driven decisions and deal-making with the devil. Main Characters Tom Walker, the protagonist of the story,  is described as a meager miserly fellow and is probably Irvings most despised (or least likable) character. Despite his many unsavory characteristics, he is also memorable.  Initially, Walker rejects Old Scratchs offer, but he eventually gives in to the devils conditions. Walker has been compared to Faust/Faustus, a character who has appeared in countless works through literary history, from Marlowe, Goethe, and beyond. Walkers wife is such a minor character that her name is never given, but she can be likened to her husband in her miserly nature and volatile temper, as Irving describes: Toms wife was a tall termagant, fierce of temper, loud of tongue, and strong of arm. Her voice was often heard in wordy warfare with her husband, and his face sometimes showed signs that their conflicts were not confined to words. Old Scratch  is another name for the devil. Old Scratch is described as a dark-skinned man. Washington Irving wrote, It is true, he was dressed in a rude, half Indian garb, and had a red belt or sash swathed round his body, but his face was neither black nor copper color, but swarthy and dingy and begrimed with soot, as if he had been accustomed to toil among fires and forges. The actions of Old Scratch are similar to other tales where he is the tempter, who offers the protagonist riches or other gains in exchange for the characters soul. Major Events and Setting The Devil and Tom Walker may be a short story but quite a bit takes place in its few pages. The events - and the locations where they take place - really drive the overarching theme of the story: avarice and its consequences. The events of the story can be divided into two locations: Old Indian Fort Tom Walker meets Old Scratch: Tom takes a shortcut through tangled, dark, and dingy swamplands, which are so dark and uninviting that they represent hell in the story. Boston Bolstered by the ill-gotten riches offered by Old Scratch, Walker opens a brokers office in Boston. Walker lends money freely, but he is merciless in his dealings and ruins the lives of many borrowers, often repossessing their property.A ruined speculator asks for a debt he owes to Tom to be forgiven. Walker refuses, but the devil rides in on a horse, easily sweeps Tom up, and gallops away - and Tom is never seen again. After that, all the deeds and notes in Walkers safe turn to ash, and his house mysteriously burns down.
